The pelvic examination is one of the most anxiety provoking procedures for women. It may be for your routine cervical smear test, an IUD insertion or replacement or an essential test such as an endometrial biopsy. These procedures can be uncomfortable and the fear of discomfort, embarrassment or a previous negative experience can deter some women from attending.
Here are some tips that can help you through the procedure.
Before the procedure:
- Write down questions about the exam if you have any so you don’t forget to ask them.
- Eat something light and stay hydrated.
- Take some painkillers such as Ibuprofen or Naproxen 1-2 hours prior to the procedure.
- Bring your partner or a friend along for some support.
- Wear comfortable clothing to your appointment.
- Empty your bladder immediately before the procedure.
- Ask for local anaesthetic if it hasn’t already been offered- if its appropriate.
During the procedure:
- Try breathing exercises to help you stay calm and relax your muscles
- Use distractions- listen to music or talk to your partner / friend
- Its ok to ask for a pause or to change position to get more comfortable.
After the procedure
- don’t try to get up too quickly, take a minute or more if you need, to recover
- have your friend or partner drive you home
- you can take more painkillers if you need to, or use a hot water bottle.
